Neuron Garage was born from a simple yet powerful childhood memory: one summer, the founder’s husband and a friend decided to build a working boat with no prior experience, instructions, or how-to videos. Despite the uncertainties, they forged ahead through trial, error, and creativity—ending the summer with a floating boat and a deeply ingrained growth mindset. That memory became the heart of Neuron Garage, inspiring a program where children experience that same “think, build, learn” process through hands-on engineering challenges using recycled materials, supporting resilience, curiosity, and creative thinking.
Founded in 2014 in Austin, Texas, Neuron Garage was launched by educator Kaylie Reed, who brought years of classroom experience and a background in alternative and Montessori teaching methods. Her expertise and passion for child development shaped the camp’s structure, which combines guided open-ended play with intentional reflection and community building. Summer camps and seasonal programs invite kids from kindergarten through sixth grade to use everyday recycled materials to solve weekly engineering challenges—bringing both the joy of discovery and the power of perseverance alive in every creative activity.
The typical Neuron Garage day blends focused building sessions with opportunities for play, collaboration, and reflection. Children engage in “Think > Build > Learn” cycles, working through failures and breakthroughs alongside their peers and supportive guides. These instructors are thoughtfully selected for their belief in growth-mindset principles, trained in positive reinforcement strategies, and dedicated to creating a safe, nurturing environment.
