Trumpism and Franchisee Selection
This might sound strange, especially coming from a millennial, but, Donald Trump gave some great, advice that would have a ‘uge, and I mean ‘uge, impact on how franchisors select their franchisees. The outspoken businessman and Presidential candidate’s proposed method for vetting immigration candidates, prior to admitting them into the United States, has one applicable rule.
I’m sure you’re scratching your head and trying to figure out which of the countless things he’s said over the past 18 months I’m referring to. And no, the correct answer is not: “to build a wall”.
In June , Trump stated that if he were elected, he would only allow people into our country that “share our values”.
So why does that matter and how does it relate to franchisee selection? I’m glad you asked.
Values matter.
Our values, quite frankly, define us. They govern a person’s desires and how they are expressed. They are what motivate us and shape our behaviors. So you can see why Trump suggests shared values should be a major vetting tool for allowing access into the country. (BTW. If you want to read more about values, check out: 4 Value Sets You Should Know. Shared values are the key to building compatible relationships. Now the next part – how does values alignment relate to franchisee selection?
Matching a franchisee’s core values with a company’s core values creates compatibility and harmony. Having shared values provides a solid foundation for a long-term business relationship. Like-minded people have a basis for understanding, communicating and exercising judgment. Values alignment builds strong brand recognition. Zoracle Profiles’ research and that of others show that there is a strong link between financial performance and values alignment. When the values of an organization are in alignment with the aspirational values of the franchisees, the result is high performance.
Imagine for a moment that your franchise system is its own country and you are in charge of granting access to new citizens.
Just like countries, no two franchise systems are the same. They each have their own unique: values, culture, and stages of growth.
As the franchisor, it’s your role to grow the franchise system with new franchisees. Ideally, these new franchisees will be compatible, successful, strong performers. Guess what one of the biggest compatibility markers are? Shared VALUES!
Let’s bring it back to the top.
If the potential next POTUS thinks a strong vetting criteria for our Country are shared values, shouldn’t we consider doing the same when selecting our franchisees?
