BeaverTails is a Canadian chain famous for its unique, hand-stretched pastries, that originated in the small town of Killaloe, Ontario, in 1978. The company was founded by Grant and Pam Hooker, who sought to bring a traditional family recipe to the public, transforming a simple, delicious pastry into an iconic Canadian treat.
The inspiration for BeaverTails came from a traditional Canadian family recipe. The pastry, known for its distinct shape resembling a beaver’s tail, was a favorite treat in the Hooker family. The dough is hand-stretched, fried, and then topped with a variety of sweet toppings. This unique approach to pastry-making set the foundation for what would become a beloved Canadian brand.
Grant and Pam Hooker made their first sale at the Killaloe Craft and Community Fair in 1978. The initial response was overwhelmingly positive, which encouraged them to pursue the idea of selling BeaverTails on a larger scale. The name “BeaverTails” was chosen to reflect both the shape of the pastry and a quintessential symbol of Canada—the beaver.
Today, BeaverTails has over 140 locations across Canada and several international outlets, continuing to expand while maintaining the quality and authenticity that made the brand famous. The company remains a family-owned business, committed to delivering the same delicious pastries that delighted customers at that first fair in Killaloe.
